South from Tulum (3 hours driving), you can find this amazing tourist destination, Majahual or Mahahual, where you can have a relaxed and chillout time. This town has an attractive ‘Malecon’ that offers several restaurants, bars and shops along the beach. During the high season, Mahahual receives up to 5 international cruises per day.
The Bacalar Lagoon is called ‘The Lake of Seven Colors’, due to the different tones of water. You must go if you are travelling the Quintana Roo State. In 2007, Bacalar was declared a ‘Magic Town’. In the eighteenth century, San Felipe’s fort was build, due to many attacks from English, Dutch and French pirates. There are more attractions, such as the Cenote Azul and some Mayan archaeological sites.
Talking about the kitesurfing in Mahahual and Bacalar, we consider that these places are paradisiacal and magical spots. However, there are no good launch areas, that’s why is not recommended for beginners or intermediate kitesurfers. In Mahuahual there is a reef 100 meters away from the beach, it can be dangerous while riding. Also the space is very limited for launching and landing a kite. There is not any large or wide launching area in the Bacalar Lagoon. The only option would be to launch the kite from a boat on the lake.
