San Felipe, Las Coloradas and Rio Lagartos are smalls towns located on the north coast of the state of Yucatan. The ports are primarily fishing villages, but recently have tourist activity. The towns are two and a half hours driving from Cancun, Tulum or Merida. The town of San Felipe is located 11 km west of Rio Lagartos. The Ria Lagartos, is a natural reserve, world famous for the colonies of pink flamingos, bird area and mangroves. Now days, these towns offer many services for eco-activities, adventure and trips to watch the birds, crocodiles and beaches. Chichen Itza and Ekbalam (mayan ruins) are just around 1 hour driving. Valladolid is the nearest big city, great for a day visit, it is a colonial city. Las Coloradas is getting a more touristic due to the colorful pink lagoons where the extract salt is extracted. It is prohibited to kitesurf because is private property but you have a really nice public beach to kite names “Cancunito”. You can access to the beach directly by car. In San Felipe and Rio Lagartos you need to hire a boat to arrive to the kite beach (quite cheap with the fishermen’s). Kite Conditions: These are great beaches for learning how to kiteboard in a remote and exotic place, due to its exposure to consistently side-onshore winds, shallow waters, no big obstacles on the wide and long beach, natural beauty and many days of wind during all year. You can do a large downwind from Rio Lagarto to San Felipe, only for experience riders and with a supervision boat. The best wind you have from November till beginning of August. Mostly HOT. Shorty is comfortable for winter Norte winds. Dominant winds: N, NE, E, SE. Respect to shore: side-onshore, sideshore. Best direction:N, NE, SE, S. Wind strength 10 knots to 25 knots. La Brisa comes all the time in the afternoon with NE sideshore, even when windguru predicts no wind, during the months from March to August.
