1) Izamal
Izamal is a beautiful colonial town with traditional buildings and beautiful old houses all painted in yellow and white, making the entire town look like a movie set and giving it a special and unique charm. Izamal is also known as the Yellow City and the City of Hills due to the remains of ancient maya temple pyramids. You can explore the magical village of Izamal walking or take a tour in a Calesa (a horse-drawn carriage) that drives you around. In the center of Izamal you’ll find the ‘Convento de San Antonio de Padua’ (Convent of San Antonio Padua), a huge Franciscan monastery and one of the oldest Catholic monasteries in America.
Izamal was an important religious center of the Mayas and today you can visit the ruins of four large pyramids that overlook the center of town.
2) Merida
Merida is full of culture and traditions. It is the capital and largest city in the state of Yucatan and on the Yucatan Peninsula. It’s a modern, cosmopolitan city with many art galleries, restaurants, museums, shops and boutiques. The Cathedral de San Ildefonso (San Ildefonso Cathedral) on the main Plaza is one of the top attractions in Merida and the oldest cathedral on the continent.
Visiting Merida you should try the delicious and famous Yucatecan food in one of the cities restaurants. It’s worth staying in Merida for a few days as Merida gives you many different opportunities for day trips to visit the area around. Go and see the pink flamingos in Celestun or Rio Lagartos, visit the beautiful colonial Haciendas, go Kitesurfing in Progreso, climb the pyramids of Uxmal or jump into a freshwater Cenote. 3) Valladolid
Valladolid, a small city in the state of Yucatan, offers its own historic charm and architectural beauty. It is definetaly one of the most beautiful colonial cities in Yucatan. Located one and a half hours from the Riviera Maya its the perfect destination for a day trip. It offers the perfect opportunity to combine the Mayan ruins of Ek Balam or Chichen Itza with a visit of the city. Valladolid is known for its quiet lovely streets and colorful walls.
