Playa del Carmen is a cosmopolitan town, the locals called it “Playa”, is a coastal hotel town in the Quintana Roo State on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. Playa del Carmen is at the center of the Mayan Riviera and gives a complete chillout atmosphere, small boutique lodgings, and a distinct european ambient.
On the beginning it was a small fishing town, the tourism around the area began with the passenger ferry service to Cozumel Island. The tourist realize inmidatly that some of the greatest beaches and vibes in Mexico were to be found in the Riviera Maya, especially in Playa del Carmen. The visitors realized that it is a great spot to chill out away from the crowds of Cancun city but with nicer beaches and blue/turquoise waters. There are many water ‘cenotes’ (underwater caves) around the area.
The town has one of the best and glamour main streets to walk in the Americas . La famosa Quinta Avenida, or the “Fifth Avenue” is all pedestrian for 3 km, a line of boutiques, bars, resorts, restaurants and many shops. The people from Playa del Carmen and the government have attempted to retain Playa del Carmen’s reputation and charm as a friendly village and artists town.
The town is very cosmopolitan, many nationalities and ages can be found walking in the streets, relaxing on the beach, eating in a nice restaurant, drinking a tequila in a chillout bar. “Beach” is Playa’s meaning in spanish, there are many services and amenities on town, Playa del Carmen is a true mexican beach town with everything at just a few steps away, especially the ocean.
Kite Conditions:
This is one of the most knowned spots in Mayan Riviera. This spot has been the stop for international competitions, like the PKRA. You can take some kiteboarding lessons our courses in some of the kitesurfing schools. The only permitted beaches are Playacar and Cocobeach.
Dominant winds:NE, E, SE, S. Respect to shore:onshore, side-onshore, sideshore. Best direction: NE, E, SE. Wind strenght 10 knots to 20 knots aprox. Blowing at: morning, afternoon, evening.Best season: January, February, March, April, May, November, December.NE and SE, sideonshore, 80% of the time. Steady wind. Crystalline water.Flat to choppy. Some 3′ shore break in higher winds. Some little reef breaks close to shore. Some shallow areas near shore. Very clean, clear water and turquoise spots in shallow areas. May not be too interesting for those wanting waves.
