Bucerias means (place of divers), it is a mexican small fishing town that attracts those tourist who don’t want the big resorts of Nuevo Vallarta or Puerto Vallarta. Bucerias is located between Nuevo Vallarta and Punta Mita, Sayulita, only 20 minutes from Puerto Vallarta international airport. Bucerias has more than 5 miles of sandy, soft and white beaches, and it is located at the longest bay in Mexico, the Bahia de Banderas. The strong winds are great for kitesurfing and windsurfing, and the beach makes it great walks and jogging. Bucerias is considered to be the Wind Capital of the Riviera Nayarit.
Bucerias, the cobblestone streets village, it’s known for it’s relaxed atmosphere and it has all the services that the tourist needs. Bucerias is surrounded by amazing mountains, jungle and the Valle de Banderas (Banderas Valley) which gives incredible sunsets and sunshine all year around. There are variety of mexican restaurants, boutique shops, stores, bars and art galleries in downtown. If you are looking for more nightlife you should go to different night clubs in Puerto Vallarta. Before the termal wind picks up, in the morning you can practice Stand Up Paddleboard with flat water conditions. Also you can go on a surfing trip, there are many of the best surf beaches around Bucerias. The climate in Bucerias during the kite season is quite warm. The annual average temperature is 25°C. No need to use wetsuit, just lot of suns cream and a lycra.
There are not too many kiteboarders in the area, that’s why Bucerias is the perfect kite spot to take some kiteboarding lessons. During the weekends you can probably see more kiters from Guadalajara City and some other local kiters. In May you should be part of the biggest kitesurfing event in Mexico, the famous Festival del Viento, our company Kitesurf Vacation is proud to be sponsor (Festival del Viento Photos). A few weeks before, there is another Paddleboard and kiteboarding event named as the Bucerias Classic.
Kitesurfing and wind conditions in Bucerias:
The wind in Bucerias is generated due to the thermal effect, the wind is created by the warming of the huge valley (Valle de Banderas) behind Bucerias. Usually the wind starts to blow around 1:30 pm and end about 7:30 pm. The wind forecasts won’t show exactly the wind speed because they don’t detect the thermal wind. The key to know if it’s going to be a windy day in Bucerias and La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, is to check the correct direction O, ON, NO (less than 305 degrees), if the wind is NO, (more than 305 degrees) or NNO possibly the most appropriate kite spot would be Nuevo Vallarta or Destiladeras (Veneros). If the wind comes from the north, the best kite beach is Litibu, Punta Negra and Higuera Blanca. Note that the wind usually rotates slowly in the clockwise direction; so the wind might end, you will see the white caps away from the beach and the wind line, you must move to another kite spot. The Mexican Kiteboarding Association (AMK) has installed a weather station, which inform us the current wind in Bucerias (see link). The kite and wind season in Bucerias usually covers the months from January to June. Best season: March, April, May and June. Usually the wind is onshore but sometimes switches sideonshore. It is very possible to have 4-5 windy days during the week in the kiteboarding season.
